The Kinney Reunion

Larae at the free green at Alpine River Inn

The family of Gerald L. and Virginia B. Kinney is holding the 4th family reunion in the summer of 2009. Previously we have held reunions in Utah, Michigan, and Maine. Every three years we gather the five siblings of Gerald and Virginia, together with their children, their children, and now, their children, for a long weekend of sharing, singing, eating, and games.

This year the planning committee of Mark Hopkins, Dawn Kinney-Miller, Kathy Hahn, Trent Colford, Sharma Colford, and Mark Kinney have been planning a great time for all. Now we can get excited! Leavenworth, Washington, here we come! After many calls, lots of family discussion, and several questionnaires, we have decided to hold the Family Reunion August 5-9, 2009 in Leavenworth, Washington’s Bavarian village in the beautiful Wenatchee Valley. It looks like we will probably have 25 adults and 19 children from 5 – 17, for a total of 44. Yea!!!

information now suggests that the weather will be HOT!!!

  1. Okay, here are some great details I got today from the Alpine Rivers Inn:
The meeting room (downstairs, river view room)
    There is no piano
There are some games such as cribbage, yahtzee, scrabble, and sorry (some others and parts of puzzles, etc)
We will be able to carry our breakfasts into the river room
The room stays locked and we’ll have someone from the Inn open it for us. They close the lobby between 8 and 9pm, and we would be responsible to lock it in the evenings when we are done.
We may use the room throughout the day for our stay, there are no other conferences going on then.
We may leave things in the room and then lock it during times we aren’t using it

    Other info:
They have a full size conventional oven in their office, which we can use if we need it to prepare something
It is a 10-12 minute walk to downtown leavenworth, on sidewalks
The golf deal is that there is an 18 hole putting ‘green’ (?) at Enzian Inn, we may each go and show our room keys and they give us a ‘putter’ to use. She says that it is beautiful, kids love it, and it takes about an hour to complete. We may use if free one time per person/ per day!
    In Leavenworth:
there is a place that rents bikes reasonably–Das Rad House (Haus?)
    Best pizza in town–Leavenworth Pizza
KOA is the ‘nicest she has been to’
There is a leavenworth summer theater (they have a website, I haven’t looked yet) that always has productions going on

    Swimming:
Usually in the summer you can tube down the river (Tube Leavenworth has reasonable rental rates). She says that due to low snow pack levels, she doubts we will be able to tube by August this year. If we did tube, it generally starts at Icicle Rd, and then goes from there downriver.
Blackbird Island has a great beach on the River (right in town)
Lake Wenatchee is also a good swimming place/park and is a 20 minute drive

    hiking:
    Icicle Gorge-20 miles from town
    Blackbird Island
check at Chamber of Commerce (509) 548-5807

    Volunteer Activity:
nursing home close by is Mountain Meadows Assisted Living (509) 548-4076
Community Cupboard (509) 548-6727 is a local assistance program that provides clothing and food to people that need it. She says that we could most likely help out there, or they would know of needed projects. She said she will also ‘keep her ears open’ for other projects that might fit our desires.

Wow, I think that’s it! She was a wealth of info. She will be sending me a Leavenworth directory and an email with more info. I’ll pass things on to you as I get it.

  2. Carol at the Inn says:

    In the past we’ve
been able to swim & tube in August. There are some parts of the River that you do have to carry youre tube across because it’s so shalow. At this time tho it looks a little low and with the 100 degree weather forecasted for weeks to come its hard to say. I’m sure you will be able to swim in places. If you have any more questions please let me know.
    Sincerely,
    Carol

  3. Hi everyone! Wish we were there. Hope your first evening was fun. It’s been in the 70′s and 80′s temps but very muggy in RI. Not typical summer weather. Enjoy.
